{"id":2165,"date":"2016-05-31T22:37:38","date_gmt":"2016-05-31T22:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?p=2165"},"modified":"2016-08-15T17:11:03","modified_gmt":"2016-08-15T17:11:03","slug":"to-fraserburgh-and-the-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?p=2165","title":{"rendered":"To Fraserburgh and the end"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last day was by the map the longest of the walk, about 18 miles.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d hoped to make enough progress for it to be shorter. \u00a0Unfortunately, large amounts of time were consumed trying to load, rotate, save, and \u00a0upload photographs and posts via narrow-band Internet connections. \u00a0I never seemed to get off before noon&#8211;an appallingly late hour, and one by which most Challengers were halfway done for the day.<\/p>\n<p>It was also the longest day as calculated by the pedometer I discovered on my new iPhone a few months ago. \u00a0The average day was about 37,000 steps. \u00a0The one from Gardenstown to Fraserburgh was 42,000 steps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2168\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2168\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2168\" src=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-3-169x300.png\" alt=\"image\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-3-169x300.png 169w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-3-577x1024.png 577w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-3.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I left Gardenstown on the road, as advised by Bob Watt (of the previous post), but hoped to get to the cliff tops eventually. \u00a0I wanted particularly to get to a point of land called Troup Head that is famous as a nesting spot for gannets, puffins and other exotic marine birds. \u00a0But there was no easy way to get there, and I was unwilling to do much experimenting. So I left it for another day.<\/p>\n<p>I eventually got to the road down to Pennan, a cliff-bottom hamlet where much of the movie &#8220;Local Hero,&#8221; starring Burt Lancaster, was filmed. \u00a0All the guides mention this, and there is apparently a red phone booth there that figures prominently in the story. \u00a0Many people visit Pennan just to get a photograph of the phone booth. \u00a0I&#8217;ve never seen the movie and didn&#8217;t want to go down and back up a steep hill, even without the backpack. \u00a0So I passed it by, too.<\/p>\n<p>But I did take the time to look around a church for sale at the junction of the road I was on and the one down to Pennan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2172\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2172\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2172\" src=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-144-e1464718588872-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"image\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I walked on the road for quite a while, eventually passing a ruined church and graveyard on a road that went to the shore. \u00a0The gravestones and memorial plaques in such places have just enough information to tell a nation&#8217;s story as well as a family&#8217;s. \u00a0Much tragedy is recorded on them. \u00a0They are hard to read, but repay the effort.<\/p>\n<p>The family that built this chapel, now as empty as a shipping container, had only one child who could be said to have lived to full adulthood.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2179\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2179\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2179\" 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a plaque whose commemorated people include a 60-year-old casualty of World War II and an inspector of rubber plantations in French with emergent hay and animals, to get there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2208\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2208\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I got to some new fencing that I found out with my hand was electrified. \u00a0I thought my trousers might be sufficient insulators to get me over, but they weren&#8217;t. \u00a0But\u00a0I concluded that like all unpleasant thing, electrified fences eventually come to an end. \u00a0I made it there, climbed over a gate, crawled under the electrified wire, and proceeded.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2187\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2187\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2187\" 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I managed to notice without alerting them four fox cubs outside their den under a gorse bush on a bank. \u00a0I was downwind and able to watch them for 10 minutes through the binoculars. \u00a0If you blow up this photograph you may be able to make them out. \u00a0 When I started to walk, they noticed me. \u00a0One of them couldn&#8217;t suppress curiosity and looked at me with pointed ears from the mouth of the burrow, finally disappearing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2190\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2190\"><img 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I found myself between two barbed-wire fences, walking a path I couldn&#8217;t change. \u00a0There couldn&#8217;t have been a \u00a0better place to be trapped.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2192\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2192\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2192\" 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I passed a house that had the remains of Dundarg Castle and Fort in its backyard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2193\" 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>About six o&#8217;clock, I got to Rosehearty, the town just to the west of my destination. \u00a0(&#8220;Just&#8221; being six miles.). I hadn&#8217;t eaten since breakfast, so I asked a man if there was a place to get a meal. \u00a0He was on the street, celebrating having just won \u00a350 on a scratch-off lottery card he was holding.<\/p>\n<p>He directed me to a local pub. \u00a0I had smoked salmon and leek risotto, and moved on. \u00a0I got to Fraserburgh, and after a little trouble found my way to the guest house where I&#8217;d booked a room. \u00a0It was about 8.30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The next day I got up and went to the harbor. \u00a0Fraserburgh has a commercial fishing fleet. \u00a0Like Burghead, MacDuff, and some of the other places I&#8217;d passed through, it was a no-nonsense, hard-bitten place that was actually more beaten down than it looked. \u00a0But it at least had a little fishing left, unlike those smaller towns.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2197\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2197\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2197\" href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2195\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2195\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2195\" 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He called them &#8220;crab prawns.&#8221; \u00a0They looked like plain crabs to me. \u00a0I asked when they were caught. \u00a0He said, &#8220;this morning.&#8221; \u00a0I told him at least he had a bank-holiday weekend coming up. \u00a0He said: \u00a0&#8220;No holiday for us. \u00a0If the weather stays good, we&#8217;re going out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here I am, on the dock.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2199\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2199\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" was officially done.<\/p>\n<p>I visited with my friends Mark and Carol Janes, whom I had been trailing like an anemic G-man along the Moray Coast. \u00a0I&#8217;d stopped at three places&#8211;a golf course bar, a bake shop, and a gas station convenience store&#8211;where they&#8217;d stopped just hours before.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2200\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2200\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2200\" src=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/image-158-300x225.jpeg\" with Jean Turner and her husband, Allan. \u00a0Jean, at age 76, was the senior walker of The Great Outdoors Challenge. \u00a0 She is a retired surgeon, as is her husband. \u00a0She grew up in Portsoy on the Moray Coast, and was most helpful in my research last winter. \u00a0Allan is a Hebridean Islander and native Gaelic speaker. \u00a0They are people with great stories.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2201\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2201\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2201\" 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#8217;t waded into the North Sea in Fraserburgh. \u00a0It would have required climbing down a ladder into the oil-slicked water of the harbor. \u00a0So the next morning I walked to Montrose&#8217;s beach and took off my boots.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2203\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2203\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
