The members of the group dispersed in various directions, many staying longer in Europe. I stayed an extra day in Genoa and Ellen and Jim stayed two.<\/p>\n<p>On my last day we took an outing Ellen had found in her research. \u00a0It was to the Regional Natural Park of Portofino, an area between Genoa and Cinque Terre. \u00a0We took a half-hour train ride to the town of Camogli and then hiked along the coast to an abbey whose origins were in the 11<sup>th<\/sup> Century, at a place called San Fruttuoso.<\/p>\n<p>We climbed out of Camogli on stone steps and ramps, past terraced gardens and olive groves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2734\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2734\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2734\" src=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5174.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5174.jpg 3264w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5174-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5174-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5174-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5174-676x507.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3264px) 100vw, 3264px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In one place the wall along the path was built so that a tree could grow through it, suggesting that parts of the path were former terraces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2733\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2733\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2733\" src=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5178-e1524104298904.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2448\" height=\"3264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5178-e1524104298904.jpg 2448w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5178-e1524104298904-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5178-e1524104298904-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5178-e1524104298904-676x901.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2448px) 100vw, 2448px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nets that catch falling olives were furled; Instead, we went down to the stone beach and swam and lay in the sun for the hour until we caught a boat back to Camogli.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2725\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2725\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2725\" src=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5250.jpg 3264w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5250-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5250-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5250-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5250-676x507.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3264px) 100vw, 3264px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The two food-writer comedians in the movie &#8220;The Trip to Italy&#8221; visit San Fruttuoso. \u00a0The place is better known for something we didn&#8217;t see.<\/p>\n<p>Offshore is a statue of Christ in 50-feet of water. \u00a0It is a memorial to people who&#8217;ve died diving. \u00a0It was placed in 1954 near where the first Italian to use scuba gear, Dario Gonzatti, died in 1947. \u00a0It can sometimes be seen from the surface. \u00a0This is a model of it in the abbey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/?attachment_id=2724\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2724\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2724\" src=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5247.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5247.jpg 3264w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5247-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5247-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5247-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/aweewalk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/IMG_5247-676x507.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3264px) 100vw, 3264px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Flushed with a sense of accomplishment, we went prowling for the right place to eat that night when we got back to Genoa. We found it. \u00a0It was a restaurant called \u201cthe Cardamom\u201d (reason not obvious) near the hotel we\u2019d moved to after the tour ended.<\/p>\n<p>It had a couple of bright but stuffy rooms and an outdoor seating area, all below street level. And they smoked the old-fashioned way, with cigarettes between courses. It took us a while to get waited on. The band, Snake Oil Ltd., was a local one and featured a singer who\u2019d been in a better-known group called Big Fat Mama. (All of this from our waiter, who also smoked).<\/p>\n<p>They started playing about quarter of eleven. They were pretty good.
